India is known to be one of the most unsafe countries for women to live in. While sexual violence and oppression of women increases worldwide, under the current right-wing regime, violence on women in India has increased many-fold in the last decade. The recent brutal gang rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkatta has sparked wide protest across India and opened new questions on rape as a tool of state-control and an inheritance of colonial infrastructure. In this workshop/talk, Aanka and Madhusree discuss the pervasive presence of rape in India and its implications for us as a society worldwide. London Nightcafe is a small venue so these workshops will be first come first served. Please arrive in good time.
